I'm Steph, a production designer & buyer based in Naarm (Melbourne). I came to the art department by way of writing and comedy, so I'm especially drawn to how design can tell a story, say the unspoken, and create opportunities for surprise or delight onscreen.
I've designed commercial projects for clients like Melbourne Water, the Cancer Council, Homes Victoria, and the VCARB Formula 1 team, bringing a specificity and warmth to spaces where there's only a very short time to communicate what's needed.
On music videos for artists like Kate Miller-Heidke, Ninajirachi and Vigilantonie, I’ve had the chance to lean into pure visual creativity with a bold, non-naturalistic style.
On indie projects like Are You Coming to My Birthday? (SXSW Sydney, Fantastic Fest), Mute (winner of VCA Best Production Design), it’s been about getting deep into the story world - what's the core of the narrative, and how can every design decision serve that?
I've also worked in larger film & TV art departments, including as props buyer on Sleeping Dogs, set dresser on 50 episodes of Neighbours, and junior buyer/dresser on Netflix's Clickbait.
I completed my Master of Production Design at VCA, where I was awarded the Jim Marks Scholarship to attend the Production Designers Gathering in Greece. In 2024 I was sponsored by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust to spend two months learning draughting for film with Terry Ackland-Snow at Film Design International, out of Pinewood Studios in the UK.
In my spare time you can find me making funny things out of polymer clay, doing a Wikipedia deep-dive, or cutting up bits of paper on my loungeroom floor.
